Project Summary

Central Engineering Services was engaged by Chemeketa Community College to provide construction observation and testing services during a series of planned pavement improvements. The project scope included the demolition and reconstruction of approximately 1,200 feet of full-width, two-lane roadway. Central's role involved evaluating aggregate base thickness, verifying subgrade competency, and performing density testing of asphaltic concrete (AC) layers to ensure compliance with project specifications. Throughout the project, Central collaborated closely with contractors to provide recommendations and support for achieving robust and compliant pavement construction.

Scope of Work:

Central Engineerings involvement in the Chemeketa Community College pavement improvement project encompassed a range of critical activities to ensure successful roadway reconstruction. The project required excavation to a depth of 21.5 inches, consisting of a 14-inch thick aggregate base and a 7.5-inch AC layer. Central's team conducted comprehensive evaluations of the aggregate base thickness and verified its conformance to the approved plan set. The subgrade competency was assessed using a standard steel soil probe to confirm stability prior to further construction activities. Throughout the project, Central provided density testing for the AC layers, which were placed in three lifts of 2.5 inches each. In areas where subgrade issues arose, Central recommended over-excavation and reinstallation to mitigate potential risks and ensure long-term pavement performance. Collaboration with contractors was key in addressing unforeseen challenges and implementing practical solutions that adhered to project requirements.

Features:

  • Conducted subgrade evaluations to ensure stability and compliance with design requirements.

  • Provided oversight during excavation and placement of aggregate base materials.

  • Collaborated with contractors to identify and address potential problem areas proactively.

  • Issued detailed field reports documenting all observations and test results.

  • Delivered a final compliance letter affirming adherence to geotechnical specifications.

Results:

The project was completed successfully with all observed areas of subgrade and aggregate base meeting project specifications and recommendations. Additionally, all tested AC sections were constructed and compacted within required specifications. The contractor's proactive approach to ensuring stability and compliance contributed to the project's success, reinforcing the importance of thorough preparation and quality control in pavement construction. Central Geotech values working with conscientious teams that prioritize safety and quality, resulting in positive project outcomes and strengthened professional relationships.
